Matthew Gibson would be a deserving nominee for the first annual High School Rudy Award. Matt is a student that joined the football program as a freshman. He deals daily with Aspergers Disorder (a form of autism). This disorder can lead to impairments in social interaction and academics. These characteristics are not what define Matt. His dedication, commitment to his academics and his willingness to help his teammates are his defining qualities.
As a sophomore Matt was voted by his teammates for the Varsity letter award that was given to an underclassman that did not step on the Varsity field but contributed to the success of the team through his effort and commitment to the program. This award has been held in high esteem, since it provides a varsity letter to players that have not stepped on the varsity field. It recognizes the efforts a player makes in all aspects of the game. Sacrifice for the team, willingness to demonstrate a work ethic that is seen in very few, this is what made Matt the recipient of this award.
Matt has continued his dedication during his junior and now into his senior season. He has missed only a hand full of offseason workouts and has maintained good academic standing and has developed into a young man that would be trusted with the heart and soul of this team. He does what is right by the program and makes every attempt to put his family and team first.
Early in 2009, Matt and his family were dealt a challenge. His younger sister was diagnosed with cancer. Matt has embodied the commitment of the program by taking care of his family first. Our program preaches the importance of other things in life. Family and academics always come first. Matt has continued to make every effort to be there for his sister in her time of need and has maintained a dedication to his goal of getting on the field on Friday nights.
He has been one of our most dedicated lifters and has even competed in power lifting events, something that is not easy for those with Aspergers. Matt’s willingness to dedicate himself to his family and the football program is an inspiration to all that Matt has touched. As his teacher and coach, I can appreciate all he must overcome to step on the field and face another person while counting on so many others.
I cannot speak enough praises for how far Matt has come over the past four years. Every player on the team has seen Matt’s dedication and love for the game. Matt has aspiration to further his education and hopefully his playing career. For all of the qualities and reasons stated above, Matthew Gibson deserves serious consideration for recognition by your organization as one of the First Annual Rudy Award Recipients.
Sincerely
